Welcome back to the LL Study Guide daily review. I’m glad you’re here.

Today we’re walking through Match Day seven, and this one really jumps around: from TV sports and mystery novels, to Scandinavian waterways, tabletop gaming, nuclear physics, and an ancient desert city that also happens to be an Indiana Jones set.

Let’s get into question one.

Question one asked:

“In December 1993, just six years after its prime-time launch, Fox stunned the television industry by outbidding CBS for a package of broadcast rights to what, a move that helped establish Fox as a major network? It fills the blank in [BLANK] on Fox, branding the network has used since the beginning.”

The answer is: the N F L.

So that blank is “N F L on Fox.”

In nineteen ninety three, Fox was still the scrappy upstart network. It had The Simpsons and some edgy shows, but it wasn’t really treated as a peer of A B C, C B S, and N B C.

Then it did something wild. It bid about one point five eight billion dollars for four years of National Football Conference games. That ripped N F L rights away from C B S, which had been showing that package for almost four decades.

That deal did two really big things. First, it gave Fox must‑see Sunday afternoon football and a Super Bowl, which instantly made it feel like a “real” network in the eyes of a lot of viewers. Second, it gave them a powerful brand: “N F L on Fox,” with that bold logo, flashy graphics, and the now‑iconic theme music.

If you remember the early to mid nineteen nineties, Fox leaned into the slogan “Same game, new attitude.” They brought over star announcers John Madden and Pat Summerall from C B S, they pioneered the little on‑screen score box—what became the FoxBox—and they presented games with an energy that felt closer to video games like the Madden N F L series.

There’s also a fun culture clash in the background. At the time, Fox was best known for The Simpsons and other edgy programming. Executives reportedly had to reassure the N F L that Bart Simpson was not going to be in the broadcast booth. So there’s this sense of the respectable N F L meeting the rebel network and both reshaping each other.

Alright, from football to fiction.

Question two:

“What author, reportedly the best-selling novelist of all time with estimated sales of over 2 billion copies, famously disappeared for 11 days in 1926, prompting a nationwide search before turning up in Harrogate, Yorkshire, under the false name Mrs Teresa Neele?”

The answer is: Agatha Christie.

Christie is often cited as the best‑selling fiction author in history, with something like two billion copies of her books sold. That alone is remarkable. But the part the question is tapping into is her real‑life mystery.

In December nineteen twenty six, after an argument with her husband, Christie left her home in Sunningdale. Her car was later found abandoned near a place called Newlands Corner, which kicked off a massive search. We’re talking police, volunteers, headlines across Britain, and even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle getting involved—he famously took one of her gloves to a psychic.

Eleven days later, she turned up at a hotel in Harrogate, registered under the name Mrs. Teresa, or Tressa, Neele. That surname “Neele” was the same as her husband’s lover, Nancy Neele, which only deepened the mystery.

To this day, no one is completely sure what happened during those eleven days. Explanations range from a dissociative fugue state and severe depression, to the theory that she staged the disappearance to embarrass her husband. Christie herself did not talk about it much later in life, and she doesn’t cover it directly in her autobiography.

That blank in the question is such a good reminder that sometimes a writer’s life is as puzzling as their books. And in Christie’s case, pop culture has really run with that. There are films and T V dramas that spin fictional stories about those missing days, and even Doctor Who did an episode called “The Unicorn and the Wasp” that weaves her disappearance into a sci‑fi murder mystery.

Let’s leave country houses and jump north to some cold water.

Question three asked:

“The 150-mile-long and 84-mile-wide arm of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Skagerrak and the adjoining, similarly sized waterway called the Kattegat link what two seas?”

The answer: the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

So, picture the map of northern Europe. You’ve got the North Sea out to the west, between Britain and Scandinavia, and the Baltic Sea tucked in to the east, touching Sweden, Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, and so on.

The Skagerrak is like a long, deep arm of the ocean between Norway, Denmark, and a bit of Sweden. From there, the Kattegat is the shallower sea between Denmark and Sweden. Together, they form the watery connection between the North Sea and the Baltic.

The name Kattegat is great. It comes from a Dutch phrase that means “cat’s gate,” because medieval sailors thought it was so narrow and full of reefs that it was like trying to squeeze a cat through a tiny opening. You had to be careful sailing through there.

Historically, this area was a huge chokepoint. Before canals like the Kiel Canal gave ships a shortcut, pretty much any ship entering or leaving the Baltic had to pass through this route. That gave powers like Denmark and Sweden a lot of leverage over trade and naval movement.

It also shows up in military history. The biggest naval battle of World War One, the Battle of Jutland, took place in the nearby North Sea. In Germany it’s literally called the Skagerrak battle, the Skagerrakschlacht, because that whole region is the gateway between seas.

Today, it’s still one of the busiest shipping corridors in the world, with tankers and cargo ships moving between Baltic ports—like Saint Petersburg or the ports in the Baltic states—and the wider oceans.

If you’ve watched the T V show Vikings and remember the town called Kattegat, that’s a fun bit of trivia: the real Kattegat isn’t a town at all. It’s this sea area we’re talking about. The study notes have a little comparison of the show’s fictional geography versus the real Scandinavian coastline if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

Alright, let’s head from the sea to the tabletop.

Question four:

“The medieval miniatures game Chainmail, co-designed by Gary Gygax in 1971, was a precursor to what seminal game, published three years later, that contributed significantly to an increase in the purchase of icosahedrons?”

The answer is: Dungeons and Dragons.

Chainmail was an early nineteen seventies tabletop wargame. You’d use miniature figures to fight medieval battles, measuring distances and rolling dice to see what happened. Gary Gygax and Jeff Perren wrote the rules, and then Gygax added a fantasy supplement with wizards, heroes, and monsters.

From that, Gygax and Dave Arneson made a leap: what if instead of commanding armies, each player controlled one character and you told an ongoing story together? That evolved into Dungeons and Dragons, first published in nineteen seventy four by a tiny company called T S R.

The question mentions “an increase in the purchase of icosahedrons.” That’s just the geometric term for a twenty‑sided solid. In gaming terms, it’s the classic D twenty die. Before D and D, you didn’t really see big bags of weird dice being sold to hobbyists. Once the game took off, sets of four, six, eight, ten, twelve, and twenty‑sided dice became standard.

Culturally, D and D is everywhere now. There was a Saturday‑morning cartoon in the eighties. The kids in E T are playing it in the opening scenes. More recently, Stranger Things uses D and D monsters and terminology—like the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer—to frame the supernatural threats in the show. There are sitcom episodes, like on Community, where the whole plot is just the characters playing D and D together.

And then there’s the video‑game side. If you’ve ever played computer role‑playing games like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, or countless others, you’ve felt D and D’s influence. Party‑based adventures, character classes, experience points, all of that comes straight from early tabletop design.

From dice, let’s move on to atoms.

Question five asked:

“What element, the heaviest found naturally on Earth in significant quantities, is closely associated with French physicist Henri Becquerel and is named after an unrelated object discovered by William Herschel in 1781, eight years prior to the element’s own discovery?”

The answer is: uranium.

Uranium is a heavy, silvery metal, atomic number ninety two, and it’s the heaviest element that occurs naturally on Earth in significant amounts. It was identified in seventeen eighty nine by Martin Heinrich Klaproth, working with a mineral called pitchblende.

Klaproth named it after the planet Uranus. That planet had been discovered only eight years earlier, in seventeen eighty one, by William Herschel. There was a sort of fashion, especially in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, to name new elements after celestial bodies—uranium for Uranus, cerium for the asteroid Ceres, and so on.

So where does Henri Becquerel come in? In eighteen ninety six, he was studying materials that glowed after exposure to sunlight. He had uranium salts on top of a wrapped photographic plate, expecting to see some effect if the salts were “activated” by light. Then the weather turned cloudy, he put the setup away in a drawer, and when he developed the plate later, it was still fogged.

That meant the uranium itself was emitting powerful, invisible radiation, with no sunlight involved. That was the birth of the idea of spontaneous radioactivity. Becquerel shared the nineteen oh three Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery, alongside Marie and Pierre Curie.

Uranium then becomes central to the entire nuclear age. The Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima in nineteen forty five used highly enriched uranium two thirty five. Most nuclear power plants today use low‑enriched uranium fuel to generate electricity. And in a very different, more domestic context, uranium oxides were used in decorative glass—so‑called uranium glass or Vaseline glass—which glows a bright green under ultraviolet light and is now a collectible.

If you remember the Chernobyl disaster, the reactors there were fueled with slightly enriched uranium dioxide. When Reactor Four exploded and burned in nineteen eighty six, it spread uranium fuel and fission products across Europe.

On a lighter note, the nineteen fifties in the United States saw a “uranium rush,” where prospectors hunted for uranium ore in the West, egged on by government bounties. There was even a children’s board game called Uranium Rush, and a novelty song, Uranium Fever, which later made its way into the Fallout video‑game series.

All of those threads—planet naming, Becquerel’s experiment, bombs, reactors, green glass, and pop‑culture songs—are pulled together in the study notes if you want a more structured walkthrough.

Finally, we head from nuclear age back to the ancient world.

Question six:

“What ancient city in present-day southwest Jordan was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom until its annexation by Rome in the early 2nd century CE?”

The answer is: Petra.

Petra is sometimes called the Rose City because so many of its famous buildings are carved right into pink and red sandstone cliffs. In antiquity it was known as Raqmu. It sits in what’s now southern Jordan, tucked into rugged terrain, and it was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom.

The Nabataeans were an Arab trading people who controlled key caravan routes across the deserts of Arabia and the Levant. They made their money taxing the incense and spice trade—think frankincense, myrrh, and all the goods moving between southern Arabia, the Mediterranean coast, and Egypt.

In one oh six C E, the Roman emperor Trajan annexed the Nabataean kingdom. In Roman terms, annexation meant that Petra stopped being the capital of an independent kingdom and instead became part of a Roman province, called Arabia Petraea.

What makes Petra so striking, visually, is the combination of monumental rock‑cut tombs and temples with really sophisticated water engineering. The city sits in an arid region with flash floods, so the Nabataeans built channels, cisterns, and dams to capture and control water. It’s a kind of desert plumbing miracle.

If you’ve seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you know Petra’s most famous face: Al‑Khazneh, “the Treasury.” In the film, that façade is the entrance to the Grail temple at the end of the canyon. In real life, that narrow canyon is called the Siq, and the Treasury is a tomb front, not a temple interior—but the imagery is so powerful that a lot of people first learn about Petra from that movie.

Petra shows up in other big productions too, and nearby Wadi Rum has become a go‑to filming location for science fiction landscapes. Petra itself was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in nineteen eighty five, and it’s also on a lot of art history syllabi—Al‑Khazneh and the Great Temple are core examples in A P Art History.

The study notes have links to UNESCO materials that dig into the hydraulic systems, the geology of that sandstone, and the story of Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, the European traveler who helped “rediscover” Petra for Western audiences in the early eighteen hundreds.
