podcast_script: Hey everyone, and welcome back to another episode of the LL Study Guide match day review. I’m glad you’re here. We’re going to walk through all six questions from this match day, fill in a bit of background, and hopefully turn a few of these facts into stories you’ll actually remember.

Let’s jump in with Question one.
Question one asked: “Named for Alexander of Aphrodisias, who described it around 200 C E, ‘Alexander’s band’ is the noticeably dark strip that appears between a primary and secondary example of what phenomenon, such as viewed by a weeping and joyful Paul ‘Bear’ Vasquez in a viral video from 2010?”
The answer is: rainbow.
So Alexander’s band, or Alexander’s dark band, is that darker strip of sky between the bright main rainbow and the fainter secondary rainbow in a double rainbow. Alexander of Aphrodisias described this way back around the third century, but most people saw it, without knowing the name, in that famous Double Rainbow YouTube video.
What’s going on here physically is kind of neat. When sunlight hits raindrops, you get refraction, internal reflection, and dispersion. That makes the primary rainbow, which you usually see at about forty two degrees from the point opposite the sun. Some light goes through an extra internal reflection inside the drops and makes a second, fainter bow a bit higher up, around fifty degrees, with the colors reversed.
Between those two bows, there’s a range of angles where the light just doesn’t get directed toward your eyes. Because fewer rays are coming from that part of the sky, it looks noticeably darker. That’s Alexander’s band.
What made this show up in trivia is that Double Rainbow video from twenty ten. Paul “Bear” Vasquez filmed this incredible double rainbow near Yosemite and just absolutely lost it on camera, laughing, crying, asking what it means. The clip blew up, got remixed into an auto‑tuned song, and became one of the iconic early internet memes. So if you remember his tearful “whoa, double rainbow all the way across the sky,” you’ve seen Alexander’s band, whether you knew the term or not.
Rainbows also carry a lot of cultural weight. In the Bible, in Genesis, the rainbow is a sign of God’s promise to Noah. In modern times you have the rainbow pride flag, designed by Gilbert Baker in the late nineteen seventies as a symbol of LGBTQ plus pride. And in music, you’ve got everything from Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon cover with a prism splitting light into a rainbow. All of that comes from the same simple physics of light in droplets.

Alright, on to Question two.
Question two said: “A ratio approximately equal to 1.618 to 1 appears in certain natural growth patterns, has long been associated with harmonious proportion in art and architecture, and has been argued by scholars to appear in works ranging from the Parthenon to Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man. This is best known as what ‘Ratio’?”
The answer is: the golden ratio.
Mathematically, the golden ratio is the proportion where the whole is to the larger part as the larger part is to the smaller. If you set that up as an equation, you get x squared equals x plus one, and the positive solution works out to about one point six one eight to one. It’s usually written with the Greek letter phi.
You see numbers close to this ratio when you look at Fibonacci numbers. Take the sequence one, one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen, and so on, and divide each term by the one before it. Those ratios get closer and closer to the golden ratio as you go. That link explains why plant spirals and phyllotaxis patterns sometimes look like they’re using the golden ratio: the counts of spirals often follow Fibonacci numbers.
In nature, you’ll often hear that sunflower seed heads, pinecones, shells, even galaxies follow perfect golden spirals. The reality is a bit messier. Many of those spirals are logarithmic, but not exactly golden. Plants do tend to space leaves and seeds using something close to the golden angle, about one hundred thirty seven and a half degrees, because that spacing avoids overlap and packs things efficiently. So there’s a real pattern there, just not always the mystical perfection people like to claim.
In art and architecture, the story is even more mixed. You’ll read that the Parthenon was designed on golden ratio lines, or that Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man encodes phi. Modern scholarship is fairly skeptical. Detailed measurements of the Parthenon don’t support a neat golden‑ratio grid, and Leonardo’s drawing is mostly based on simple whole number body proportions. The golden ratio obsession really took off in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when people started retrofitting it onto older works.
Pop culture really pushed this into the mainstream with things like The Da Vinci Code. Dan Brown treats phi as this secret code number behind everything, and even defines it a little sloppily. It’s a good example of how a kernel of true math can get amplified into myth.
For design, though, the golden ratio can still be a useful rough guide—whether you’re laying out a page, composing a photo, or designing a logo. Lots of designers like it because it often produces pleasing, asymmetrical balances.

Let’s move from proportion to politics with Question three.
Question three asked: “In July 1917, in the midst of anti‑German sentiment during World War I, ‘Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha’ was changed by official proclamation to what new name?”
The answer is: Windsor.
So this is about the British royal house changing its dynastic name during World War One. Before nineteen seventeen, the ruling family was technically the House of Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha, a German ducal house that came in through Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert.
Once the war broke out and Britain was fighting Germany, having a German‑sounding royal surname became a political problem. On top of that, German air raids over Britain were being carried out with Zeppelin airships and Gotha bombers. Those “Gotha” planes shared the name with the royal house, which really didn’t help public perception.
So King George the Fifth issued a royal proclamation in July nineteen seventeen, dropping Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha and rebranding the dynasty as the House of Windsor, after Windsor Castle. It sounded reassuringly English, tied the monarchy to a specific, iconic royal residence, and helped distance the family from its German roots.
This change didn’t just affect the monarch. Other branches of the family with heavily German names anglicized theirs too. The Battenbergs, for example, became the Mountbattens, a name you might know from Lord Mountbatten and from Prince Philip.
Technically, if you trace bloodlines, later monarchs like Elizabeth the Second and Charles the Third could be put under other German dynastic labels. But officially, the brand stays Windsor. It’s a reminder that royal “houses” are as much about public image and national identity as they are about strict genealogy.

Now let’s jump to the world of beauty and branding with Question four.
Question four said: “In 2024, Sabrina Carpenter was named global ambassador for what premium professional hair‑care brand, which is now owned by the L’Oréal Group and was founded in 1960 by hair‑care pioneer Jheri Redding and business partner Paula Kent?”
The answer is: Redken.
Redken is a salon‑focused hair‑care brand that started in nineteen sixty. The name comes from its founders: actress Paula Kent and her hairdresser and chemist Jheri Redding. Take “Red” from Redding and “ken” from Kent, and you get Redken.
Paula Kent had fine hair and sensitive skin and kept having bad reactions to on‑set products. She realized that stylists and actors were using all these chemicals without really understanding the science. So she and Redding set out to build a brand around hair chemistry: protein‑based conditioning, moisture balance, and an acidic pH that’s kinder to the hair and scalp.
They launched with just a handful of products and a big emphasis on education for stylists. Over time, Redken grew into a major professional brand, and in the early nineteen nineties it was bought by L’Oréal. Today it sits inside L’Oréal’s professional products division alongside other salon lines.
In twenty twenty four, Redken named pop star Sabrina Carpenter as its first global ambassador. That timing is no accident. She had a massive year with songs like “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” and she became a fashion and beauty reference point, especially for her signature blonde hair. Redken’s marketing makes a big deal about that, pointing to their Shades E Q gloss as the secret to her color.
It’s also a nice example of how consolidated the beauty world is. You might see Redken as this separate, edgy salon brand, but behind the scenes it’s part of the same corporate family as a lot of other products you see on shelves.

Alright, let’s cool things down—literally—with Question five.
Question five asked: “What is the last name of the British naval officer and polar explorer who achieved the historic feat of locating the North Magnetic Pole in 1831? Thanks to his later missions, his name is all over Antarctica, including the world’s largest ice shelf, one of the continent’s major seas, an enormous Southern Ocean gyre, and an island that is home to the active volcano Mount Erebus.”
The answer is: Ross, as in James Clark Ross.
James Clark Ross was a British naval officer and one of the major polar explorers of the nineteenth century. In eighteen thirty one, he led a sledging party across the Canadian Arctic and determined the position of the North Magnetic Pole on the Boothia Peninsula.
The North Magnetic Pole is different from the geographic North Pole. It’s the spot where Earth’s magnetic field points straight down. Compasses point roughly toward it, and it moves over time as the planet’s molten outer core shifts. Ross’s measurement gave scientists a key data point for understanding Earth’s magnetism in that era.
Later, from eighteen thirty nine to eighteen forty three, Ross led a major Antarctic expedition. A lot of the big Antarctic names you see on a map come from that voyage. There’s the Ross Sea, a huge embayment on the edge of the continent. The Ross Ice Shelf, which is the largest ice shelf in the world, a vast floating platform of glacier ice that’s still attached to the land. Ross Island, off the coast, which is home to Mount Erebus and Mount Terror.
Mount Erebus is especially notable. It’s the southernmost known active volcano on Earth, and it has a persistent lava lake. Ross actually saw it erupting in eighteen forty one and named it after one of his ships. The other ship was named Terror, which is how Mount Terror got its name.
Those ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, pop up again in another famous story. After Ross’s Antarctic voyage, they were reused for Sir John Franklin’s doomed Northwest Passage expedition in the eighteen forties. Both ships disappeared in the Arctic ice and became one of the legendary mysteries of exploration. Their wrecks were only found in the twenty first century, and that whole saga inspired the TV series The Terror.
Meanwhile, Earth’s magnetic field has kept wandering. Since Ross’s day, the North Magnetic Pole has moved thousands of kilometers, and in recent decades it’s been racing toward Siberia at dozens of kilometers per year. So the specific point Ross marked is now a historical site rather than the current magnetic pole, but it’s still important as an early, well‑documented measurement.
The Ross Sea itself has become a focus for conservation, often called the “Last Ocean” because its ecosystems are relatively pristine compared to other oceans. There’s a major marine protected area there now.

Finally, let’s end on a holiday classic with Question six.
Question six asked: “What character was created in 1939 by Robert L. May, a copywriter for the Montgomery Ward department store, which distributed millions of copies of a promotional children’s booklet featuring the character before May’s brother‑in‑law (songwriter Johnny Marks) wrote a song about him and Gene Autry made him a household name?”
The answer is: Rudolph the Red‑Nosed Reindeer.
Rudolph didn’t start as a song. He started as a piece of marketing. In nineteen thirty nine, the Montgomery Ward department store wanted a Christmas giveaway for kids. Instead of buying storybooks from someone else, they decided to create their own in‑house character. They assigned the job to a copywriter named Robert L. May.
May wrote a rhyming story about a young reindeer with a glowing red nose who’s mocked and excluded by the other reindeer until that foggy Christmas Eve when his nose finally becomes an asset. Montgomery Ward printed it as a little softcover booklet and gave it away free to customers. That first season alone, they handed out around two point four million copies. Over the next few years, despite wartime paper rationing, millions more circulated.
May’s brother‑in‑law was Johnny Marks, a songwriter who specialized in Christmas music. Marks took the story and turned it into a song, “Rudolph the Red‑Nosed Reindeer,” in nineteen forty nine. Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, recorded it that same year. His version hit number one on the pop charts the week of Christmas and sold millions, becoming one of the all‑time best‑selling holiday singles.
From there, Rudolph spread into other media. There was a nineteen forty eight animated short produced for Montgomery Ward, and then, in nineteen sixty four, the stop‑motion TV special Rudolph the Red‑Nosed Reindeer. That’s the one with Hermey the elf who wants to be a dentist, the Island of Misfit Toys, and Burl Ives narrating as Sam the Snowman. The special added a lot of details to Rudolph’s world, but the core idea—outsider with a “flaw” that becomes a superpower—comes straight from May’s original booklet.
There’s also an interesting creator‑rights angle. Initially, Rudolph belonged to Montgomery Ward. But a few years later, the company’s CEO, Sewell Avery, agreed to transfer the rights back to Robert May. That’s unusual for corporate characters, and it allowed May and his family to actually benefit from the success. He reportedly called their home “the house that Rudolph built.”
Johnny Marks, meanwhile, quietly shaped a big chunk of the Christmas soundtrack. In addition to Rudolph, he wrote “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Silver and Gold,” among others—many of which show up in those classic TV specials.
